In relation, your home won’t appear as stylish (even if it is) with clutter around, too. So how do you get rid of clutter as a source of stress and bring about the beauty in your home at the same time? Check these tips.

From the psychological perspective, here are the reasons that place clutter as a primary stressor at home (and at work, too!):

Clutter is an unnecessary stimulus. Imagine walking in to your home study and finding these things on your table: a coffee cup, a crumpled tissue paper, and a keyboard with spilled coffee. That alone stimulates your visual and tactile senses.

Clutter is anti-relaxant. If you encounter clutter the moment you open the door, you can say goodbye to relaxation and peace – two of the things that everyone expects to enjoy at home. By the way, can you find that DVD you’ve been longing to watch?

Clutter is frustrating. Speaking of your missing DVD, what else have you been painstakingly trying to look for but are unable to find? Or maybe you’ve found it already but where? Was it in the kitchen when it’s supposed to be in your bedroom?

Mind the pile

Move around the house and sort the clutter you see into four categories: those that you want (or need) to keep, those that you can donate, those that you can sell, and those that you can throw away. Be very critical because you may end up keeping something you won’t use anyway or the other way around. The rule is for you to keep the things you see yourself using in the next few years or so.

Check your storage

Open all of the places where you store your things. Categorise what you’ll find according to what was discussed in the first tip. Now, take a look at the things you want to keep and find hidden treasures. Do you have something that you can use to accentuate your home? Why store it when you can display it? You can store other things in their place.

Organise your things

Organise your things according to function. This means that all things that are supposed to be in the kitchen should be in the kitchen and so on. If you organise, you can easily find your things. That saves you the time and frustration “treasure hunting.” It also means giving your storage area the much needed space and structure. The next time you need to keep something, you can easily find a spot for it.

Develop a cleaning routine

Check your calendar and allot a time solely for cleaning. The rule of thumb is to clean your home as necessary but it’s best for you to do it once a week or every other week. When you clean, don’t neglect the hard-to-reach spots, the corners, and the areas occupied by furniture you rarely move. You’d be surprised at the things that got stuck there.

Cultivate discipline

If you have a habit of tossing things around and leaving it that way, stop. One of the things you can do to avoid clutter is to develop discipline. If you pull something out, bring it back to its rightful place. If you have trash, you know where it should be. If you possess discipline, the need for you to constantly clean and reorganise decreases – and so is stress!
